What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from September 2023, written while the school was changing leadership and consulting on its strategic goals. This kind of report sets out what ERO and the school will evaluate together, here how well leadership and an inclusive, culturally responsive curriculum and teaching help every student see herself as a capable learner and succeed.

ERO pointed to leaders who had planned ahead for curriculum and qualification changes, well-established systems for staff professional learning tied to school priorities, growing consultation with Māori whānau and students, and internal evaluation that draws on student and parent views.

Next, the school plans to keep its planning for the new curriculum coordinated, coach curriculum leaders to manage change and support good teaching, give teachers targeted professional learning on new curriculum requirements, keep families consulted and informed about the curriculum, and check closely how the changes affect students.

Enrolling

St Oran’s College is state-integrated, so it gives preference to families with a connection to its special character, such as long-standing involvement in a church or faith community, and a limited number of non-preference places are offered only after all preference applicants can be placed. Its site describes a reasonably convenient area covering Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua, with priority inside that area for sisters of current or former students and other set groups, and then by the date of the original application.

The main entry point is Year 7, and places at other year levels open only when a student leaves. Families join a pre-enrolment waiting list, are sent an application pack in Year 6, and preference applicants may be invited to an interview. The school sets out its application steps and timeline on its How to Enrol page.
