Tawa Wellington: Northernmost Suburb with Five Train Stations

Tawa is Wellington’s northernmost suburb, located about 15km north of the CBD between Churton Park and Porirua. Named after the tawa trees that once filled the valley, the suburb has a strong community identity built around its rail connection, Main Road village centre and well-developed local amenities. With five suburban rail stations — Kenepuru, Linden, Tawa, Redwood and Takapu Road — it is one of the best-served suburbs on the Metlink network, making it a practical choice for commuters who want space without sacrificing city access.

History

The original railway through Tawa was built by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company and opened in September 1885. The line was significantly improved in the 1930s by the Tawa Flat deviation — a new alignment used by freight from 1935 and passenger services from June 1937. The deviation severed the direct connection between Tawa and Johnsonville (which now operates on a separate branch line), allowed a much faster journey time and made the Wellington–Tawa commute viable. Electrification of the line followed in 1940.

Before 1959 the suburb was known as Tawa Flat, a reference to both the tawa trees and the flat valley floor. The name was simplified to Tawa after the suburb had grown substantially beyond the original flat area.

The Suburb Today

Tawa’s Main Road village centre provides day-to-day retail — supermarket, pharmacy, cafes, mail services and specialty shops — along the section between Lyndhurst Road and Lincoln Avenue. A further retail area exists at Linden on Collins Avenue. The suburb has its own secondary school, Tawa College, and several primary schools including Tawa School and Linden School.

The five rail stations spread across the suburb’s length mean most Tawa residents are within walking distance of a train. Journey time from Tawa station to Wellington CBD is around 30 minutes.

What Visitors and Residents Say

“Tawa is one of Wellington’s most underrated suburbs — a real community feel, everything you need locally, and the train makes the commute painless.” — Wellington resident

“Five train stations for one suburb is remarkable. Most parts of Tawa are a short walk to a station, which changes how the suburb functions compared to car-dependent northern areas.” — Tawa Historical Society
