Last updated October 2026

Newlands College is a state, co-educational secondary school for Years 9 to 13 at 68 Bracken Road, Newlands, Wellington. It opened in 1970 and had 1,253 students on its roll at 1 September 2026.

Its home zone includes all of Paparangi, Newlands and Churton Park, and parts of Grenada Village, Woodridge, Glenside, Johnsonville, Ngauranga and Ohariu; the zone map below shows the full boundary.

The school’s site describes a curriculum in which Year 9 students try subjects across every learning area, choices widen from Year 10, and Year 11 is taught and assessed by the school rather than for NCEA Level 1 so students are ready for Level 2. It also runs a Learning Support Centre for students with high ORS funding, an enrichment programme for students who want extra challenge, Gateway and Trades Academy pathways, Te Rōpū Kapa Haka o Te Ao Mārama, dance, drama, music and a school production, and an international programme.

What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Report from September 2026. ERO judged the school to be doing well in most of the areas it reviews and excelling in two: students’ engagement and sense of belonging, and support for students with additional needs.

Most students gain NCEA Level 2, a large majority gain Level 3 and a small majority gain University Entrance, and most meet the NCEA literacy and numeracy requirements.

ERO found effective leadership and governance, good teaching, a broad curriculum with clear pathways, careful use of assessment information, and strong care for international students. It rated equity as working towards: Māori and Pacific students trail their peers at NCEA Level 3, and results in Years 9 and 10 vary between learning areas.

Attendance is a key area for improvement. A large majority of students attend regularly and the rate is rising, but it is still below the government target, so ERO’s first next step is to lift regular attendance to meet it.

The other priorities are a shared, culturally responsive framework for quality teaching across the school, and stronger school-wide systems for tracking the progress of priority learners so results are fair for every group. ERO said it is confident the school is well placed to keep improving.

Enrolling

Newlands College has an enrolment scheme, so students who live in the home zone have the right to enrol, and in-zone families can apply online at any time.

Out-of-zone places, if any, are set by the board each year and offered under the scheme, by ballot when there are more applicants than places, with priority for siblings of current and former students, children of former students, and children of staff or board members. The school publishes its out-of-zone application and ballot dates on its enrolment scheme page each year.

After applying online, families are sent instructions for the supporting documents, and can ask for an interview with staff if their child has particular learning needs. New Year 9 students are invited to an orientation morning and a peer support camp, while Deans arrange subject choices and a start date for students joining other year levels.
