Kenepuru is a primarily industrial suburb of Porirua City, lying immediately southwest of the Porirua city centre and about 15 kilometres north of central Wellington. It is best known for Kenepuru Community Hospital, the main hospital complex serving Porirua, and for Kenepuru railway station on the Kāpiti Line.
Large-scale residential growth is under way at Kenepuru Landing, a Ngāti Toa-led development on former hospital land at the base of Rangituhi.
The suburb mixes commercial and industrial activity along Kenepuru Drive with emerging housing, strong rail links, and easy access to Porirua’s centre. Visitors and prospective residents find a practical base close to work, healthcare and the wider Wellington region.

About Kenepuru
Kenepuru sits in Porirua City, not within Wellington City boundaries, yet it functions as a close northern neighbour for Wellington commuters and services. The suburb occupies land between the Porirua city centre to the northeast, Rānui, and Linden to the south.
Much of the area has long been industrial and commercial, with warehouses, businesses and healthcare facilities concentrated along Kenepuru Drive and around the hospital precinct.
Kenepuru Community Hospital at 16 Hospital Drive is the defining public facility. It provides a range of community and specialist services for Porirua and surrounding areas. There is no emergency department on site; acute emergencies are directed to other regional hospitals.
The hospital grounds and surrounding streets are a major trip generator, which has driven ongoing road and intersection upgrades by Porirua City Council under the Access Kenepuru programme.
Residential character is changing through Kenepuru Landing. This masterplanned community occupies roughly 60 hectares of whenua once part of the wider hospital estate, returned to Ngāti Toa Rangatira through Treaty settlement processes.
Delivered with development partners, the project is planned for more than 700 homes of mixed typologies, open spaces, bush covenant areas, walkways and cycleways, and a community hub. The setting at the base of Rangituhi (also known as Colonial Knob) shapes the design story, with an emphasis on connection to the maunga and local ecology.
Day-to-day life still centres on work, healthcare and transport rather than a traditional high-street village. Porirua’s CBD is a short distance away for shopping, dining and civic services.
The suburb’s industrial base, hospital employment and new housing together make it a place of transition: practical for those who need rail access or hospital proximity, and increasingly residential as Landing stages are built out.
Getting Around
Kenepuru railway station sits on the North Island Main Trunk and is served by Metlink Kāpiti Line electric trains. The station is within walking distance of the hospital and serves the industrial and emerging residential areas.
Typical travel times are around 19 minutes to Wellington and only a couple of minutes to Porirua station. Off-peak services commonly run about every 20 minutes, with higher frequency at peak times.
Road access focuses on Kenepuru Drive. Council projects have included a permanent roundabout at Raiha Street and Kenepuru Drive, plus planned or deferred works at other intersections to improve safety and flow for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists as traffic grows with Transmission Gully and local development.
Buses 60 (Porirua–Johnsonville) and 60e (Porirua–Wellington) stop near the hospital. Free patient and visitor shuttle options between Kenepuru and Wellington Regional Hospital are operated by the health service on request.
History and Heritage
The wider Porirua area has a long Māori history, with Ngāti Toa Rangatira established as mana whenua after earlier iwi occupations around the harbour.
European-era development in the Kenepuru locality was shaped by the large psychiatric hospital complex (historically known as Porirua Hospital or the Porirua Lunatic Asylum) set in a once-rural landscape beneath Rangituhi. Aerial photographs from the mid-twentieth century show the hospital campus amid open country before suburban and industrial expansion.
Rail arrived earlier through farmland; demand from the hospital, commercial growth between Kenepuru Drive and the line, and nearby subdivision led to the opening of Kenepuru railway station in 1963, with pedestrian links toward the hospital and commercial area. In more recent decades, parts of the former hospital land were returned to Ngāti Toa.
Masterplanning for Kenepuru Landing began in the mid-2010s, with staged housing delivery following in joint venture and later iwi-led forms. Street naming in the new neighbourhood has drawn on Māori names for birds and trees, reflecting council policy and iwi input.
Porirua City’s growth, including Eastern Porirua regeneration and other greenfield projects, continues to increase pressure on the Kenepuru corridor, which is why transport upgrades remain a council priority.
Community Facilities and Outdoors
Kenepuru Community Hospital anchors local healthcare. Within Kenepuru Landing, plans include playgrounds, open lawns, a basketball court, public toilets, an early childhood centre and a superette as part of a mixed-use community heart, alongside bush reserves and path networks.
The suburb itself is not a major recreation destination, but Bothamley Park and the Porirua Stream pathway network lie nearby, with a gravel shared path running alongside the Kenepuru Stream through mature and regenerating vegetation. Rangituhi / Colonial Knob offers larger-scale walking and views above the city for those heading a short distance west or northwest.
Residents and workers typically use Porirua city centre facilities for libraries, aquatic centres and broader community services. The combination of hospital, rail station and new open space at Landing gives the suburb a functional rather than tourist character, suited to everyday living and commuting.
