Vogeltown is a residential hillside suburb in Wellington on the eastern slopes of Brooklyn, overlooking Newtown. It was created in 1878 when J.F.E. Wright subdivided land in the south-west of the city and named the new suburb after Sir Julius Vogel.
Vogel served as New Zealand’s eighth Premier from 1873 to 1875 and again in 1876. Before European settlement the area formed part of the Omaroro cultivation grounds used by the Te Aro hapū of Te Āti Awa. The suburb retains a quiet, established residential character with early twentieth-century housing.

Early European development followed the 1878 subdivision. History and Naming
Vogeltown takes its name from Sir Julius Vogel (1835–1899), who served as Premier during two periods in the 1870s. Vogel is remembered for his ambitious public works programme that relied on overseas borrowing to fund railways and infrastructure across New Zealand.
The suburb was one of two created in the 1878 subdivision; the neighbouring suburb of Mornington was laid out at the same time.
Prior to European settlement the land formed part of the Omaroro cultivation area used by the Te Aro hapū of Te Āti Awa. Ownership and control of the area remained with Te Aro into the European period. The name Omaroro continues to be recognised in local cultural and historical references.
