The Wellington BMX track is a 400m UCI international-standard facility located at Ian Galloway Park in the Northland suburb, run by Capital BMX Club. It is the main BMX racing venue in Wellington City and offers club racing, Have-A-Go sessions, and regular training for all ages and skill levels. Bikes, helmets and gloves are available to hire, and the first three visits are free — making it one of the most accessible intro-to-BMX options in the region.

About the Track
Ian Galloway Park’s BMX track has been developed and maintained by Capital BMX Club through volunteer effort and community funding. The facility meets UCI international racing standards — the same standard used at national and international events — making it a genuine race venue rather than just a recreational track. Capital BMX hosts Wellington Region Championship races, club days and occasional inter-club events throughout the racing season.
Club racing runs on Sunday mornings from October through April. The format follows a standard racing structure: practice and gate starts before racing begins, with motos across all grade groups. The club is all-ages — children, teenagers and adult riders all compete. First-timers can attend Have-A-Go sessions at no cost for the first three visits, with hire gear available on site.
Future Development
The team behind Ian Galloway Park is developing the IGP Wheels Hub — a proposal for a regional-scale sealed pump track, progressive dirt jump lines and associated facilities on the site. Wellington City Council has been conducting a needs analysis to inform a master plan for the park. The existing BMX track will remain central to any development.
