The Hutt Valley Thunderbolts BMX track at McLeod Park in Upper Hutt has served as the home of the Hutt Valley Thunderbolts BMX Club since 1982. About the Club
The Hutt Valley Thunderbolts BMX Club has operated continuously since 1982 and runs a family-friendly programme open to riders from balance-bike age through to grandparents. Racing and training occur during the main season from September to April or May, while casual sessions continue through winter when conditions allow. Club race days follow a standard format of five motos per rider, grouped by ability rather than strict age categories so beginners and experienced riders can compete appropriately.
New participants may try the sport through a “have a go” option for up to three club days at a $5 entry fee before joining and obtaining a BMXNZ race licence. On club days all bikes undergo scrutineering and riders must wear full safety gear; helmets are recommended at all times even for casual use. The club encourages participation in local, regional, national and international events for those who wish to compete.
McLeod Park
McLeod Park is a large public reserve in Elderslea, Upper Hutt, that stretches between McLeod Street and River Road.
