What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from February 2023. This kind of report sets out what ERO and the school will look at together, here what evidence can show the school about how an inclusive classroom culture, built through visible learning practices, improves results for students.

The school wants to see more Māori students moving on to tertiary courses and more students taking part in te reo and tikanga Māori, kapa haka, the performing and creative arts and leadership roles.

ERO noted a structured, step-by-step plan for staff professional learning shaped by culturally responsive teaching, positive relationships that make for calm and focused classrooms, a habit of review by students and staff that feeds into next steps, and flexible ways of learning for students who need extra support.

Next, the school planned to run professional learning for all staff, led by senior leaders and heads of learning areas, where staff share visible learning practices and evaluate them, to build a common understanding of how teachers can review their own practice and talk openly about what is and is not working for their students, and to track the effect of this work on groups of students using the views of teachers, students and whānau.

Enrolling

Hutt Valley High School has an enrolment scheme, so students who live in the home zone have the right to enrol.

Out-of-zone places are offered under the scheme, by ballot when there are more applicants than places, with priority for siblings of current and former students, children of former students and children of staff; places in Tautoko, the supported learning centre, are not decided by ballot.

In-zone families apply online, and the school encourages them to enrol early so their child can take part in Year 9 subject selection and an enrolment conversation. The school publishes its out-of-zone application and ballot dates on its enrolment page each year. International students apply through an enrolment form sent in by their agent.
