What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Report from August 2026. ERO rated the school Excelling for achievement, progress, literacy, numeracy, engagement and belonging, and equity: almost all students achieve NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 and meet the NCEA literacy and numeracy requirements, a large majority gain University Entrance, and Māori and Pacific students achieve strongly.
Leadership, teaching, curriculum, assessment and governance were rated Doing well, and ERO found that the school takes reasonable steps to keep students safe.
Three areas were rated Working towards: attendance, where a small majority of students attend regularly though this is improving; support for students with additional needs; and planning for school improvement. ERO’s next steps are to lift attendance, set up systematic internal evaluation, and strengthen adaptive teaching, including for English language learners.
ERO also found that identity checks on new staff had not been fully carried out and recorded, which the board has since fixed, and said reporting to the board on the international student programme needs strengthening.

Enrolling
As a state-integrated Catholic school, St Mary’s College (Wellington) gives preference of enrolment to Catholic families, for example where the student is baptised or being prepared for baptism, and preference applicants need a certificate signed by their parish priest. Non-preference students are accepted only after all eligible preference students, within a limit on numbers, and attendance dues are compulsory.
Families apply online. The school publishes its application deadline, any ballot date and when families will hear back on its enrolment page each year, and late preference applications are held until a place comes up.
