Paraparaumu Skatepark: Flow Bowl and Street Section at Maclean Park

Paraparaumu Skatepark at Maclean Park is a recently redeveloped concrete skatepark on the beachfront in Paraparaumu Beach. Designed by RICH Landscapes in collaboration with local users, mana whenua and Kāpiti Coast District Council, the redevelopment transformed an ageing asphalt facility into a modern park with a flow bowl, street section and mini ramp. The coastal setting — right on Marine Parade with the beach directly accessible — makes it one of the more scenic skate spots in the Wellington region.

About the Skatepark

The Maclean Park redevelopment replaced an old asphalt-and-concrete layout with a concrete facility across several distinct zones. The centrepiece is a flow bowl with pool coping extension, handmade FLOW Pool Tiles and a refurbished FLOW fire hydrant — the tiles were designed by mana whenua artist Kereama Taepa to reflect the coastal environment. The street area includes a multi-platform layout with ledges, rails, banks, pole jams, manual pads and stair sets, alongside a double-level jump box. A multi-level mini ramp with spines and hips rounds out the facility.

The design uses sandy-coloured concrete pigments to reflect the beach setting, with blue accents running through. In March 2025, Stage 2 of the Maclean Park development added a new amenity block and outdoor cold shower adjacent to the skatepark — a practical addition for riders heading straight from a skate session to the beach.

Location and Setting

Maclean Park sits right on the Paraparaumu waterfront, with the skatepark overlooking Marine Parade and the beach beyond. The broader park includes a marine-themed playground, public toilets with baby change facilities, BBQs, picnic areas and ample off-street parking. The combination makes it a multi-use family destination — one group can skate while others use the playground or beach, all within the same precinct.
