Oriental Bay Beach is Wellington’s most popular inner-city beach, located on Oriental Parade facing Lambton Harbour. It lies 1.5 kilometres southeast of the CBD and features a sandy beach area enlarged by a 2004 council project that brought in sand from Golden Bay.
The beach offers calm harbour waters suitable for swimming, backed by a busy promenade with cafes and facilities. Entry is free, and the area includes adjacent Freyberg Beach with its playground and pool complex.

What the grades mean
Excellent and Good: rarely unsafe for swimming. Fair: usually fine, but avoid swimming after rain. Poor: often unsuitable, especially after rain, so check the latest result first.
Grades use LAWA’s method: the 95th percentile of routine enterococci results over the five summers from 2020/21 to 2024/25, with at least 50 tests (Freyberg Beach: 52 per 100 mL from 72 tests; Wishing Well: 182 per 100 mL from 139 tests; Band Rotunda: 653 per 100 mL from 72 tests).

About Oriental Bay Beach
Oriental Bay Beach sits in the sheltered inner harbour, making it Wellington’s most popular beach for swimming, picnicking and waterfront activities. The 2004 enhancement project quadrupled the sand area and doubled the adjacent grass space at Freyberg Beach, creating a larger, more usable public space that remains popular year-round.
The beach faces Lambton Harbour with generally calm waters ideal for swimming, though conditions vary with wind direction. Southerly winds keep the area sheltered, while northerlies can create chop. Water quality is monitored by Greater Wellington Regional Council, with results available on the LAWA website.
A notable feature is the Carter Fountain in the centre of the bay, which shoots water up to 16 metres high in calm conditions and operates on a timed schedule adjusted by wind sensors. The Southern Walkway begins at the northern end of Oriental Parade.
The Promenade and Waterfront Walkway
The wide promenade along Oriental Parade is a major public space used by walkers, joggers, cyclists and families. It features cafes, restaurants and an ice cream kiosk, and connects northward to Frank Kitts Park and Te Papa along the waterfront path. The area hosts events and remains busy on summer evenings.

The playground at Freyberg Beach, part of the Oriental Bay waterfront, includes a large rope-climbing frame popular with older children. It sits near toilets, changing facilities and the Freyberg Pool and Fitness Centre, with easy access from the promenade and nearby bus stops. The play area was developed as part of the 2004 beach enhancement project.
