About Freyberg Beach Playground

The playground includes a rope-climbing structure along with a wave platform and pier that extend play into the water. The adjacent sandy beach was enlarged in a 2004 council project that brought sand from Golden Bay, Nelson, making the sand area four times larger and the grass area twice as large.

Freyberg Pool and Fitness Centre stands directly behind the beach at 139 Oriental Parade. It houses a 33.5-metre heated indoor pool, spa, sauna, steam room, gym and group fitness studio, with changing facilities open to beach users.

The site forms part of the continuous Oriental Parade waterfront path, a flat route popular for walking, cycling and rollerblading that links the city centre to the bay and beyond.

Oriental Bay Waterfront

Oriental Bay is Wellington’s most popular urban beach, featuring the Carter Fountain that shoots water up to 16 metres in calm conditions. The fountain operates on scheduled times and shuts off automatically in strong wind. The curving esplanade offers harbour views and several cafés within easy reach of the playground and beach.

Swimming and Beach Activities

Freyberg Beach supports swimming in the sheltered inner harbour, with the pier serving as a diving platform and the wave platform providing additional water play. Water quality information is available through LAWA. The beach is also used for picnicking on the grassed areas.

What Visitors Often Say

Families praise the convenient mix of a proper sandy beach, playground equipment, nearby pool changing rooms and waterfront path all in one spot close to the city.

Visitors highlight the scenic harbour setting, easy parking options and the ability to combine swimming, play and a walk or cycle along the parade on the same outing.
