The Paekakariki Escarpment Track (also called the Escarpment Track or — locally — the Stairway to Heaven) is the best day walk on the Kāpiti Coast, 40 minutes north of Wellington. The 10.3-kilometre point-to-point route runs between Paekākāriki and Pukerua Bay along the escarpment above the Centennial Highway, with sweeping views of Kāpiti Island, the Tasman Sea and the coastline below. Train access at both ends makes it a straightforward car-free day out from Wellington.

The Walk
The track follows the lip of a steep escarpment between the two railway stations, climbing quickly above the highway and railway line to give unobstructed views over the Tasman coast. The route includes two swing bridges, multiple staircases totalling over 1,200 steps, and sections of narrow ridge where exposure to the wind can be significant. The track is well-formed and signposted throughout, but the steep terrain and physical demands make it unsuitable for young children or those new to hill walking.
Most people walk south to north — starting at Paekākāriki and finishing at Pukerua Bay — then catching the train back. The reverse direction is equally valid. Kāpiti Island is visible for much of the upper section, sitting offshore in the Tasman Sea. On clear days the views extend to the South Island.
The track forms part of Te Araroa, New Zealand’s 3,000-kilometre national trail, and walkers completing Te Araroa pass through both stations.
Logistics — Using the Train
Both Paekākāriki and Pukerua Bay are on the Kāpiti Line — about 45–50 minutes from Wellington on the train. This makes point-to-point walking straightforward: take the train to one end, walk the track, and take the train back from the other. Trains run hourly on weekdays and less frequently on weekends — check the Metlink timetable before you go. Tickets can be purchased using a Snapper card or with cash on the train (card payment not available on board).
If driving, park at the Paekākāriki Railway Station car park. Do not park on Ames Street as there is insufficient space for walkers’ vehicles.
What Visitors Say
