About the Park

Khandallah Park occupies a broad sweep of the Outer Green Belt on Wellington’s northern edge. The park’s walking network runs through one of the city’s largest continuous areas of native forest, with tracks ranging from gentle paths near the entrance to a steeper climb to the Mt Kaukau summit. The direct route to the top is 1.5km and relatively short, but the terrain steepens noticeably near the summit. The full loop adds considerable distance and takes in a wider section of the park.

Mt Kaukau (445m) is one of the higher accessible points in the Wellington city hills. The Skyline Walkway also passes through the park, linking Khandallah to the wider ridge walking network that extends south to Karori and north towards Johnsonville.

Family Facilities

At the park entrance, a well-maintained playground and grass area make Khandallah a popular family destination beyond just the walking tracks. A café with outdoor seating operates near the park. The unheated outdoor pool is open during summer and is a popular local feature. A stream runs through the lower section of the park, which younger children enjoy.
