Kilbirnie is a substantial eastern suburb of Wellington, 3km southeast of the CBD on the flat Rongotai isthmus between Evans Bay and Lyall Bay. Named after the town of Kilbirnie in Scotland by original landowner Coutts Crawford, the suburb remained isolated until a tram tunnel through to the city was completed in 1907, after which it grew rapidly. Today Kilbirnie is the main commercial and community hub for Wellington’s eastern suburbs, home to the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre, the Ākau Tangi Sports Centre, and a well-developed local shopping area.

History
The suburb takes its name from Kilbirnie in Scotland, named by Coutts Crawford, who initially owned the land. Kilbirnie remained part of his estate until the 1870s when it was sold for housing. In the 1880s the suburb was remote and isolated — the rough terrain between it and Wellington made access difficult. The breakthrough came in 1907 when a tram tunnel linking Kilbirnie to the city was completed, opening the suburb to development. It grew steadily through the early twentieth century to become one of the eastern suburbs’ most important commercial centres.
Kilbirnie Today

The local shopping area on Kilbirnie Crescent and nearby streets provides supermarkets, cafes, specialty retailers and daily services for the eastern suburbs. The suburb is also home to significant community and recreational facilities.
