About Katherine Mansfield House & Garden
Katherine Mansfield, born Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp on 14 October 1888, lived at the Tinakori Road house for her first five years. The family moved away in 1893. The two-storey wooden house was constructed around 1887–1888 for her father Harold Beauchamp. It remains one of Thorndon’s surviving Victorian domestic buildings and provides a tangible link to colonial Wellington.
Mansfield left New Zealand for London at age 19. She became internationally recognised for her modernist short stories, many drawing on her New Zealand childhood experiences. She died in France in 1923 at the age of 34. The house fell into disrepair and was converted into flats before the Katherine Mansfield Birthplace Society began restoration work in the mid-1980s.
