About the Park

Wainuiomata Regional Park protects the Catchpool catchment — a sheltered valley of dense native forest that feels remarkably quiet given its proximity to Wellington city. The valley’s sheltered position means it can be calm and green even when Wellington is windy, making it a reliable destination year-round.

The Lower Dam, a historic water collection structure near the main entrance, is a focal point for picnicking and short walks. The Catchpool Stream runs through the park and provides swimming opportunities in clear, cold water during warmer months.

Walks and Tracks

Track options range from short family walks to a challenging all-day traverse. The Catchpool Loop (about 40 minutes, easy) provides a quick introduction to the forest. The Gums Loop (3.1 km, easy, about 1 hour) follows a mostly sealed road and is suitable for prams. The Five Mile Loop (3.9 km, easy, about 1 hour) is a pleasant forest walk.
