About the Waitohi Community Hub
Waitohi opened in 2019 as a purpose-built community hub anchoring the northern end of Johnsonville’s town centre. The library is the hub’s centrepiece — as the largest branch library in northern Wellington, it holds significantly more material than the smaller community branches and runs a wider programme of events and workshops. The hub is designed as a connective space: from the library you can walk directly through to the kindergarten, and via landscaped grounds to the Keith Spry Pool and the Johnsonville Community Centre.
Johnsonville is a large northern suburb about 20 minutes from the Wellington CBD by the Johnsonville Line train. The suburb has a busy shopping centre, and the Waitohi Hub sits a short walk from Johnsonville station.
Collections, Makerspace and Studio
The library holds an extensive general collection including fiction and non-fiction, a significant Māori collection, graphic novels, and materials in various languages. The makerspace is available for public use and provides tools and equipment for creative and digital making projects. The recording studio is a rarer feature for a branch library — it’s available for booking and can be used for music recording, podcasting, and other audio projects. Events including storytelling sessions, author talks, and workshops run regularly; check the WCL events calendar for the current schedule.
