Kaitoke Regional Park — Rivendell and the Hutt River

Kaitoke Regional Park is at the northern end of the Hutt Valley — 45 minutes from Wellington by car — and was the filming location for Rivendell in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings. The park has interpretive signs and a stone archway marking the film set location. Beyond the Middle-earth connection, Kaitoke is a genuine park destination: the Hutt River has excellent swimming holes through the park, there are picnic areas, suspension bridges over the river, and native forest walks. It’s also the northern end of the Hutt River Trail, which runs 29km downstream to Petone.

Brewtown — Upper Hutt

Brewtown is Upper Hutt’s craft beer and entertainment precinct, built on a 6,000-square-metre site on the former Dunlop Tyres factory. It brings together several of the Wellington region’s top independent breweries under one roof, alongside cafés and an entertainment centre with mini golf, ice skating, paintball, ten-pin bowling, cart racing and a trampoline park. It’s a practical all-weather option that works for groups with mixed interests. Upper Hutt has a direct train service from Wellington.

Dowse Art Museum — Lower Hutt

The Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt city is free, family-friendly and one of New Zealand’s better regional galleries. The collection focuses on applied arts, studio crafts and design — a different angle from Te Papa’s broader scope. Exhibitions change regularly. The museum is a short walk from the Lower Hutt train station.

Staglands Wildlife Reserve

Staglands Wildlife Reserve is 10 hectares of bush and farmland in Upper Hutt, home to native birds and animals in naturalistic settings. Species include kiwi (in a nocturnal house), eels, deer, goats and various birds. It’s a hands-on experience aimed at families — animals are approachable and feeding is encouraged with the farm animals.

Hutt River Trail

The Hutt River Trail (Te Ara o te Awa) is a 29km off-road cycling and walking trail following Te Awa Kairangi (the Hutt River) from the Petone foreshore to Te Marua in Upper Hutt. Mostly flat and sealed, it’s suitable for all abilities and accessible from multiple entry points via railway bridges. For cyclists, it forms the first leg of the Remutaka Cycle Trail Great Ride.
